Abdominal Hernia Repair in Orange County

The human body is perfectly imperfect. While some areas of the body – like the skull, ribs, and knees – are hard and strong to protect your joints and organs from damage, others are not as strong, and under pressure those areas of your body can struggle. An example of this is the hernia, which is a generic term referring to a segment of bowel or intestine pushing its way through the muscle in the body. The most likely place for this to occur is the abdomen, since the abdominal wall is prone to weak spots and tears that provide openings for hernias to protrude.

The Problem with Hernias

In some simple cases, a hernia can just be pushed back into the abdominal cavity with a bit of pressure. These hernias are referred to as reducible hernias. But for a lot of people, hernias can be stuck and chronic, especially after pregnancy, coughing, excessive smoking, injury, or struggles with obesity. Chronic abdominal hernias can be a significant problem, not only because they are painful, but also because you risk what’s known as “Strangulation,” which is when the herniated bowel gets its blood supply pinched off, causing the bowel to die. An intestinal strangulation can be painful, cause serious illness, and could potentially be life threatening.

Types of Abdominal Hernias and Hernia Repair

The type of hernia affects the type of treatment, as well as the risk for recurrence. At my Newport Beach office, many of my Orange County patients come in with the following types of hernias.

  • Umbilical Hernias – As the name implies, umbilical hernias are hernias that originate at the belly button, which tends to be a weaker area of the body for men and women of all ages. Because the belly button is weak, that area is a common location for frequent hernias. These types of hernias are very common during and after pregnancies.
  • Para-Umbilical Hernias – Para-umbilical hernias are very similar to umbilical hernias, to the point where the phrasing is sometimes used interchangeably. But they do differ slightly, in that para-umbilical hernias are hernias that push through the abdominal muscle around the belly button (umbilicus) and not the belly button itself.
  • Incisional Hernias – Another common type of hernia is the incisional hernia, which refers to a hernia caused by an incision from surgery. If you have had any type of surgery on or near your abdomen, the weaker scarred area may allow for a hernia to push through.
  • Other Ventral Hernias – There are other hernias that appear on the surface of the abdomen. These are all called ventral hernias. Your doctor can tell you the type of hernia that you’ve been struggling with and the recommended treatment.

Hernias can be repaired, and though hernia repair is a major surgery, hernia surgery is largely successful. Even though it’s successful, many people avoid the surgery because they don’t want to go through the surgical process, especially for something that can often be pushed back inside by hand. Yet because of the risk, hernia repair does need to be completed.

The best time to repair a hernia is when you are also having a tummy tuck. Through the tummy tuck incision, the hernia can be approached and the abdominal wall weakness can be repaired by repairing the muscle deficiency with sutures or with a mesh. Following completion of the tummy tuck, you have achieved 2 goals through one incision.
